Spišská Nová Ves Hospital Opens Renovated Surgical Department
The Penta Hospitals Spišská Nová Ves Hospital officially opened its renovated surgical department today. At the same time, they also presented the progress in the construction of a new pavilion, the shell of which is physically completed to the shell & core level. The project of the new hospital in Spišská Nová Ves is the third largest investment project of the Recovery and Resilience Plan in the Slovak healthcare system. Compared to the original schedule, both parts of the project were implemented four months ahead of schedule. The opening ceremony was also attended by the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Robert Fico, and the Minister of Health of the Slovak Republic, Kamil Šaško. Even after the investment is completed, the hospital will remain the property of the Košice Self-Governing Region.
According to the official schedule, the reconstructed part of the hospital with 34 beds and the four-story pavilion with 121 beds completed to the shell & core level were to be operational by June 2026.
“The modernization of the surgical department and the construction of the new pavilion represent a fundamental step towards ensuring that the residents of Spiš and the wider area have accessible healthcare at the level of the 21st century right at home, without the need to travel to distant cities. As the owner of the hospital, we perceive this investment as a long-term commitment to our residents – we want them to be treated in dignified conditions in the region’s facilities and for healthcare professionals to have a quality working environment. I am pleased that these projects are progressing ahead of schedule, which confirms the good cooperation of all partners and a responsible approach to public resources. I believe that the new hospital will become a symbol of a modern and strong healthcare system in the Košice Region,” said Rastislav Trnka, Chairman of the Košice Self-Governing Region.
“I am extremely pleased that we are opening the renovated surgical department today, even four months earlier than the original schedule. The modernized workplace brings a higher standard of environment not only for patients, but also for medical staff. We are also progressing with the construction of a new pavilion, which is currently physically completed to the shell & core level, also four months ahead of schedule. With this, we are successfully completing another significant milestone and confirming the fulfillment of our obligations to the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic, the Košice Self-Governing Region, and also to patients. At the same time, I would like to thank the entire team of Spišská Nová Hospital for their professionalism, commitment, and personal approach, which are positively reflected in the quality of the entire project,” said Radoslav Čuha, CEO of the Penta Hospitals Slovensko network.
The renovated surgical department underwent a complete in-depth renovation – from floors, walls, plumbing, and technologies to the building’s outer shell. The modern environment has 34 beds, of which 14 are double rooms and 6 are single rooms, a modern examination room and facilities for healthcare professionals. A new feature of single rooms is the possibility of an accompanying person staying with the patient. Each room has a separate bathroom and modern medical equipment, including medical ramps at each patient bed and a communication system between the patient and the nurse.
“I am very pleased that today we can open the renovated surgical department, which also represents a taste of what the new hospital pavilion will bring when completed. The first patients will be hospitalized in the department in the coming days and I am convinced that we will fulfill our promises and bring a higher standard of care, even greater patient satisfaction and at the same time a better working environment for our healthcare professionals,” said Renáta Šuláková, director of Penta Hospitals Spišská Nová Ves.
The project of the new hospital in Spišská Nová Ves is the third largest investment project of the Recovery and Resilience Plan in the Slovak healthcare system. The Ministry of Health has allocated 48 million euros including VAT for it. The total amount, including the costs of other induced investments, comprehensive medical equipment and external modifications, will reach 72 million euros including VAT. The difference of almost 24 million euros including VAT will be financed from private sources of the Penta Hospitals Slovensko network.
"I am proud that today in Spišská Nová Ves we see a concrete result of our efforts for a more modern and accessible healthcare for all. The reconstructed surgical department and the completion of the rough construction of the new pavilion, which we implemented ahead of schedule, are proof that investments from the Recovery and Resilience Plan are bringing real change for patients and healthcare professionals directly in the regions. Our goal is for high-quality healthcare of the 21st century to not only be a privilege of large cities, but a matter of course for every citizen of our country. This project is an example of successful cooperation and I thank all partners who are involved in its implementation. We continue because the patient is and must always be in the first place in our healthcare system," said Kamil Šaško, Minister of Health of the Slovak Republic.
