Košice County Transforms Old Rooms on Medická Street into Modern Student Homes
News
The Košice Self-Governing Region continues to modernize the United School Dormitory in Košice, which consists of three organizational units – the School Dormitory on Medická 2, Werferova 10, and Považská 7. Another 16 accommodation cells on Medická Street were renovated. The cells, which consist of two rooms, a bathroom, and a common area, underwent a comprehensive renovation. The floors, risers, and electrical installations were replaced, the bathroom facilities were repaired, the rooms were repainted, and new furniture was added.
"Our goal is for the county dormitories to be modern student homes, so that students feel at home here. The modernization of the rooms on Medicka Street is a clear signal that we care about young people. We are aware of the investment debt that has been incurred on these buildings over the decades, so we are not stopping at just cosmetic renovations. We want to create a safe, comfortable and modern environment for students. We have invested almost 700,000 euros from the county treasury in this reconstruction and we will continue to modernize other rooms," said Rastislav Trnka, chairman of the Košice Self-Governing Region.
The building on Medicka 2 is more than 40 years old, and according to the dormitory director, it is not in good technical condition.
"The biggest problem is the size of the building, its technical construction and the high cost of repairs. That is why we are preparing to repair the building's outer shell, which will modernize and make the building more attractive and will also bring significant energy savings. Our goal is to gradually transform the entire dormitory into a modern complex that will improve the quality of life of students," said Jaroslav Číkoš, director of the United School Dormitory.
In addition to the reconstruction on Medicka Street, further work is also underway on Werferová Street. In 195 rooms, the original 30W lamps are being replaced with energy-saving 6W LED sources. Additional savings will be brought by replacing classic faucets in showers with automatic sensor ones. The region is preparing to repair additional rooms and elevators on Medicka Street, as well as the repair of sanitary facilities on Považská and Werferová. In addition to Medicka, repair of the building's outer shell is also planned for the dormitory on Považská Street in Košice.
